Saint Martin window in the upper choir

Saint Martin was born in Pannonia (Hungary) in the 4th century. He was enlisted in the Roman army. Baptised after the vision at Amiens, he became a disciple of Saint Hilary of Poitiers and founded the first monastery in the West at Ligugé, near Poitiers. A tireless apostle, he was active on every front and in every field, fighting paganism, Arianism and the other heresies alike.

  • The second Charity of Martin: having exchanged his garment with a poor man, he celebrates Mass wearing a tunic that is too short; an angel covers his bare arms with sleeves. View
  • Jesus appears to Martin in a dream; Martin sees Him holding his half-cloak and hears Jesus say to the angels: “Martin, still a catechumen, has clothed me with this garment”. Martin understands the meaning of Christ’s words: “As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me”. View
